Despite months of pleas to 'leave labor in Leominster,' the birth ward at UMass Memorial Health's Leominster location will close Saturday, according to Gov. Maura Healey's office. Healey announced on Friday her administration will not intervene with the closing the hospital announced in May, but said she is ordering a 'comprehensive review' of maternal and birthing care. Healey's administration had played a central role in recent discourse about the facility, paying a surprise visit to the birth ward early in September according to advocates, acknowledging the 'critical' nature of reproductive care and making assurances she was reviewing the situation.
