As Leominster continues to grapple with damage caused by flooding last week that washed out roads , destroyed businesses , collapsed bridges and forced evacuations, the city's mayor pleaded with UMass Memorial Health not to proceed with the planned September closure of its Leominster birth ward. The hospital announced in May its plan to shutter the ward , and has faced significant opposition from the Massachusetts Nurses Association as well as politicians, community groups and advocates .
