State regulators say UMass Memorial Health's plan to shutter a maternity ward in Leominster is insufficient and have asked for additional details from the health care provider on how it will support patients in the absence of the facility. In a letter Friday to an attorney for the UMass Memorial hospital system, a representative of the Department of Public Health said the state 'does not believe the Hospital's closure plan is adequate' enough to allow the maternity ward to close on Sept. 23. In particular, state public health officials said the hospital system should provide more information on its assessment of local community needs in north-central Massachusetts and how patients will access alternative medical centers to ensure continued care.
