UMass Memorial Health and Heywood Hospital in Gardner have called off their merger eight months after signing a letter of intent for the two Central Massachusetts entities to join. UMass Memorial President and CEO Eric Dickson told employees in a memo on Thursday that the two sides have worked to 'evaluate the opportunities for a potential affiliation' since signing their letter of intent. 'Given changed circumstances and the difficult health care environment in which we all find ourselves, we decided reluctantly in December that this is not the time to pursue the corporate affiliation we initially considered,' Dickson said.
